Public sector unions PCS and NUT call on TUC to support co-ordinated pay strikes
Joint strikes over public sector pay will be voted on by members of all registered trade unions at the end of the summer. The programme for the annual Trades Union Congress in September includes two motions calling for co-ordinated industrial action. Both the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) and the National Union of Teachers (NUT) ask delegates to support the strikes. Unions are angry that the government has capped public sector pay rises at 2% with inflation running above 4%. The PCS motion states: "Congress believes that the sector-wide pay freeze has created the conditions for another co-ordinated campaign including industrial action if necessary. "Congress calls on the general council and executive committee to convene an immediate meeting of interested unions to discuss coordinated industrial action and give full support to any such action."
