Members of broadcasting union Bectu at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton have voted to accept an improved pay offer from owners City Screen. It follows strike action taken over two separate days in May and June to protest against the low wages paid to staff. Staff at the Ritzy cinema voted unanimously for action after rejecting City Screen's offer of £5.41 per hour (or £5.50 without a sales bonus). The new deal will see a staggered wage increase of more than 22% by October 2009 for the lowest paid staff, with the first instalment of 8.4% backdated to 1 October 2006. Jackie Brett-Holt, chair of the union's Ritzy branch, said: "When we demonstrated outside the cinema, the public were shocked to learn how little we get paid and were really supportive of our strike. "Our aim was to secure an offer above the poverty threshold wage, and while it is difficult to predict where the poverty wage will be in two years' time, this increase will hopefully be near it," she added.
